NEMA applauds Senate for passing Energy Policy and Modernization Act

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) commended the U.S. Senate for approving the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources’ Energy Policy and Modernization Act, S. 2012, on Wednesday.

The legislation passed in Senate by a vote of 85-12 on Wednesday. The U.S. House of Representatives released its own energy legislation in December, titled the North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act, H.R. 8. The House and Senate will have to consolidate the bills before sending the legislation for final approval.

“Passage of this legislation shows that improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s homes, schools, and other buildings as well as moving toward a more flexible, resilient, and secure electric grid are citizen issues that should, and in this case did, rise above partisan paralysis,” NEMA President and CEO Kevin J. Cosgriff said. “We thank Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA) for their continued leadership as advocates for energy efficiency, grid modernization, and the electrical manufacturing industry.”

If the bill gains final approval, it would support more energy-efficient technologies in federal facilities, private buildings, schools and homes. It would also support the improvement of U.S. electric infrastructure and technology.
