A shuffle is underway on National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) committees, with Jehmal Hudson appointed to chair the Committee on Energy Resources and the Environment and Maida Coleman tapped to take her place on the Select Committee on Regulatory and Industry Diversity.

Hudson is a Virginia State Corporation Commission judge, while Coleman is a commissioner from the Missouri Public Service Commission. While Hudson has been in her new role for a moment, Coleman was appointed this week by NARUC President Julie Fedorchak. At the head of the Regulatory and Industry Diversity committee, Coleman will promote inclusion and competitive procurement practices that support opportunities for women, minority and service-disabled veteran-owned businesses in utility supply markets.

Relationships are key for that committee, particularly for how they can provide economic benefit to ratepayers, investors and disadvantaged businesses. That can take many forms, from informative webinars to more strategic collaborations.

“Commissioner Coleman has served in various leadership capacities for NARUC, such as chairing our Committee on Consumers and the Public Interest and sitting on the Board of Directors,” Fedorchak said. “She brings an excellent background on workforce, regulatory and economic issues that will make her an excellent chair of this committee. We are also grateful to Judge Jehmal Hudson for his previous leadership and vision.”

Coleman has served with the Missouri PSC since 2015, but before that worked at the Missouri Workforce Investment Board and Missouri Department of Economic Development, as a state representative and state senator, and even became the first African American woman in Missouri history to serve as Senate Minority Leader.
