A new inspector was assigned by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to Exelon Nuclear’s Three Mile Island nuclear power plant on Thursday.

Brian Lin, a former project engineer in the NRC’s Region I office in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, has been selected by NRC officials to serve as the resident inspector for the plant, located in Middletown, Pennsylvania.

“Brian Lin’s technical experience and commitment to safety will assist the NRC in carrying out its mission of protecting people and the environment and ensuring the safe operation of Three Mile Island,” NRC Region I Acting Administrator David Lew said.

Prior to his position as project engineer, Lin spent 15 years serving in the U.S. Navy’s nuclear submarine force, where here worked as a reactor operator and a submarine officer. He has continued to serve in the Reserves since his retirement from active Naval duty. Lin is a graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Every commercial power plant in the United States has at least two NRC resident inspectors on staff. These employees complete plant inspections, supervise major work projects and function as a mediator for plant workers. Inspectors function as the public face of the plant while also acting as the NRC’s eyes and ears on the ground.
