Construction is now underway on Central Maine Power Co.’s (CMP) $5.4 million South China Substation project.

CMP, a subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc., will construct the new substation on a 1.6-acre lot across from the South China post office on Route 3. The project will boost reliability for homes and businesses in China, Freedom, Liberty, Palermo, Vassalboro and Windsor, strengthening the grid in both Kennebec and Waldo Counties.

“The existing South China substation and the energy grid that operated out of it have served the area well for many years,” Gail Rice, spokesperson for CMP, said. “Over time, there has been considerable residential and commercial growth in these communities northeast of Augusta, and these upgrades will allow us to keep providing safe, reliable service many years into the future.”

The new substation project is one element of a plan by CMP to invest approximately $40 million in the power grid this year. The new facility will replace the existing substation on Windsor Road, which will be decommissioned in December once the new facility on Route 3 comes online.

With a 34.5/12.47 kilovolt transformer, a cutting-edge control house, and plans to include a second distribution circuit, the new South China substation will guarantee stability and flexibility for the energy grid in the future.
