Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) filed a petition with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) on Tuesday for the development of the $111 million Monmouth County Reliability Project (MCRP) to enhance energy reliability in the county.

“At JCP&L, we’re committed to delivering the dependable electricity our customers need to power their homes, businesses and communities,” JCP&L President Jim Fakult said. “This filing marks the completion of many months of planning, design and engineering analysis and contains additional detailed information about the project.”

The MCRP would use a New Jersey Transit railroad right-of-way between the Aberdeen and Red Bank substations to develop new infrastructure to enhance reliability in the area. The project would include the construction of a new 230-kV transmission line, upgrades to existing substations within the county and modernizing the grid with new technology.

The project has also gained support from PJM Interconnection, LLC, an organization that oversees transmission reliability and movement across 13 states, including New Jersey, which recommended the project be built. The MCRP would also keep JCP&L in compliance with federal electric transmission reliability requirements within the county.

The petition includes a statement of necessity, the proposed route, JCP&L’s plan for permit acquisition, and plans for meeting compliance with existing health, safety, and environmental regulations.

The BPU will schedule a public hearing in the near future to discuss the project with interested parties.
