The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) closed out the Fourteenth Semi-Annual Vogtle Construction Monitoring Report on Tuesday with a unanimous approval of $160 million in expenditures on the Plant Vogtle Nuclear Power Construction Project.

The commission’s decision acknowledged that the expenditures dating from July 1, 2015, through December 31, 2015, are within the construction costs certified by the commission, and formally recognized that the funds have been spent. The Fourteenth Vogtle Construction Monitoring Report was filed by Georgia Power on February 26, with hearings taking place on June 7 and June 30. At the two hearings, the commission received testimonies from Georgia Power and from interested parties.

“The Plant Vogtle project continues to make progress,” Commission Chairman Chuck Eaton said. “While there have been setbacks, in the long run Plant Vogtle will provide economical and carbon free electricity for generations of Georgians,”

The commission established Georgia Power’s share of the construction costs for Plant Vogtle Units Three and Four at $6.114 billion in 2009. Together with its partners, Oglethorpe Power Corporation, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia, and the City of Dalton Utilities, Georgia Power owns 45.7 percent of the facility.

The power plant is expected to produce 2,200 megawatts of electricity once it comes online, enough to power approximately half a million homes.
