The Southern Company welcomed the Beijing-based company Huaneng Clean Energy Research Institute (HCERI) on Monday to the Carbon Capture International Test Center Network, a global coalition that works together toward the advancement of carbon capture technologies.

The Southern Company manages and operates the National Carbon Capture Center – a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research facility for carbon capture technologies. The center also serves as the host site for carbon capture coalition.

HCERI is a subsidiary of the China Huaneng Group, the largest power generation company in the world regarding total installed capacity. It is a leader in clean energy technology, including carbon capture, renewable energy, coal gasification, energy storage and utilizations, and emissions reduction methodologies.

“The addition of the Huaneng Clean Energy Research Institute to the network broadens the abilities of Southern Company and its research partners to develop next-generation carbon capture technologies, which are critical for a cleaner energy future,” Southern Company Executive VP and COO Kimberly S. Greene said. “We look forward to working with DOE and network members to continue the development of real solutions that will advance 21st century coal technologies on the international stage.”

Additional members of the coalition include clean energy leading research institutes from Australia, Norway, China, Korea, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.
