Dominion gives $1 million to schools for environmental energy programs

Dominion awarded $1 million in educational grants to K-12 and higher education institutions throughout the U.S. on Wednesday to fund energy and environmental exploration and workforce programs, including green roof technologies and wetland restoration.

“This year’s grants will support a variety of innovative programs encouraging young people to learn the essential skills needed to tackle real-world issues,” Dominion Foundation President Hunter A. Applewhite said. “They will help students gain knowledge and experience with technologies that are leading the way to a greener energy future.”

Through its K-12 Education Partnership, Dominion issued educational grants to 66 schools for exploratory energy and environment courses, while its Higher Education Partnership awarded grants to 30 institutions across 30 states. All of the grants combined total $1 million in funds.

All grants were made possible through the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic division of Dominion Resources. Higher education recipients include George Mason University of Fairfax, Virginia; Kent State University of North Canton, Ohio; Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia; and the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut. The institutions received grants totaling $20,000, $25,000, $35,000 and $24,500, respectively.

Approximately 400 applications were received from schools across the nation.
