Minnesota Power and Enbridge announced on Thursday that they would be partnering with the city of Duluth, Minn., and Hunt Electric to provide a nine-vehicle charging station for solar-powered electric vehicles (EVs) at Duluth’s Canal Park.

The carport, covered by a 54 kW solar panel canopy, will offer eight stations capable of charging a vehicle in two to six hours, and a ninth that will quick-charge a vehicle in 20 to 40 minutes.

“Minnesota Power is pleased to partner with the City of Duluth, Enbridge and Hunt on this exciting project,” Pat Mullen, vice president of marketing for Minnesota Power, said. “Investing in electric vehicle charging stations across our service territory is a way to help foster and grow this new technology and build the infrastructure to meet the changing energy needs of our customers.”

The charging stations will be available for public use, and the carport will also provide additional covered parking for vehicles parked at Canal Park.

“Enbridge is pleased to participate in this highly collaborative, innovative project,” John Swanson, Enbridge’s vice president of major projects execution, said. “As a company, we take great pride in meeting our primary responsibility of safely and reliably delivering energy to people across North America. What people may not know is that we have also made significant investments in renewable energy.”
