Mississippi Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley approved construction of a $3.7 million solar farm facility in New Albany, Miss., on Wednesday that will generate enough solar electricity to power approximately 250 homes throughout the region.

The solar farm facility will be located on approximately 30 acres of farm land in New Albany. The energy facility is set to be constructed near the Wal-Mart Distribution Center. The total solar panel count is expected to reach approximately 6,600. SR New Albany, LLC, is contracted to construct the $3.7 million solar farm, which will connect with the Northeast Mississippi Electric Power Association (NMEPA). Construction is set to begin before the end of the year.

“This project is a major boost to Union County and our state,” Presley said. “We may not know what the cost of gasoline will be tomorrow but we know the sunshine will be free. This solar farm will help keep rates low and affordable while using our natural resources to power the economy.”

The clean energy facility is estimated to generate approximately two megawatts (MW) of electricity, which will offer solar powered energy to consumers throughout the New Albany region. Two MW of power is comparable to supplying power to approximately 250 households.
