The Merrimack Valley Reliability Project (MVRP) received final approval from New Hampshire regulators on Wednesday, enabling construction to begin as planned later this fall.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities issued their approval for the portion of the project located in Massachusetts in April, after which the New Hampshire Site Evaluation Committee (SEC) was required to issue a certificate of approval for the new 345 kV transmission line between Londonderry, N.H. and Tewksbury, Mass.

“The Merrimack Valley Reliability Project answers an urgent need to strengthen the area’s electric system and ensure the continued reliable delivery of energy,” Eversource Vice President of Electrical Operations Joe Purington said. “This decision recognizes that our plan to maintain and operate our transmission system and meet the expectations of our customers is appropriate.”

The MVRP will be constructed in an existing utility right-of-way, passing through approximately 24.5 miles between the two states. The construction work will create more than 1,000 jobs, while the finished project will bolster the stability of the infrastructure in the region.

“This project will strengthen the power grid that underpins the economic vitality and powers the quality of life in the region,” Rudy Wynter, president of National Grid’s FERC Regulated Businesses, said. “A robust, reliable transmission system is critical to support job growth and enable our 21st century economy.”
