The U.S. Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) held its annual Innovation and Technology Transfer Award ceremony on Tuesday, recognizing researchers and staff for 169 new innovations last year, a 33 percent increase from 2014 figures.

The ceremony recognized NREL researchers and staff for contributions to scientific and engineering inventions created during the 2015 fiscal year. This year’s event recognized the innovators behind SPX Heat Transfer, LLC; Distinguished Innovator David S. Ginley; and Rising Star recipients Jason Woods, Cory Kreutzer and Derek Vardon.

“NREL continues to be a global epicenter for game-changing clean energy innovation,” Dr. David Danielson, assistant secretary for the Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), said. “Our world-class researchers at NREL have once again set a new annual record for the number of new inventions, and I am so proud of the whole team for taking their innovation game to a whole new level over the past year. The researchers being honored today truly embody the spirit of EERE’s National Lab Impact Initiative – under which we are laser-focused on expanding the industrial impact of the work at DOE’s national labs.”

The NREL inventions showcase how effective laboratory research can inform successful product design and development into the marketplace.
