Off-site solar panels now available to Rocky Mountain Power customers

Rocky Mountain Power announced on Friday that its residential and commercial customers will be able to sign up to reserve off-site solar panel blocks to take advantage of solar energy without having to install rooftop systems on-site.

While many energy customers are interested in solar energy, the technology isn’t accessible for renters, those with unsuitable rooftop structures or those with extenuating economic circumstances. For this reason, Subscriber Solar began construction of a 20-megawatt solar plant near Holden, Utah, so both commercial and residential energy customers could rent solar panels to promote the use of clean energy consumption.

Program participants will be able to rent solar energy in blocks of 200-kilowatt-hours, up to total average monthly usage. Subscriber Solar has set aside blocks for residential and commercial clients individually, and is accepting reservations on a first come, first served basis.

“Specially trained call center agents will work directly with commercial customers when they call to see how much they could save or if it might cost slightly more to use this new solar option,” Solar Program Manager Keven Hoopiiaina said. “Our business customers have told us they want more options to use solar and want to be able to show their customers they are committed to renewable energy and reducing their carbon footprint.”

Customers can call now to reserve solar blocks. The solar plant is expected to be on-line by January 1.
