Jersey Central Power and Light proposes $75 million grid upgrade for Monmouth County
Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) announced the proposal of a new project to enhance the grid in Monmouth County on Thursday, which would update a 10-mile, 230-kilovolt transmission line servicing 214,000 customers.
“We know customers are expecting more from their electric utility, and it’s our responsibility to deliver the power they need when they need it,” JCP&L VP of Operations Tony Hurley said. “The Monmouth County Reliability Project will help us provide the consistent, reliable electricity our customers depend on in their daily lives. We look forward to working with the community to ensure the project results in minimal impacts and maintains the unique beauty of our area.”
The project, named the Monmouth County Reliability Project (MCRP), is a part of JCP&L’s larger $250 million, multi-year Energizing the Future transmission system upgrade initiative.
The project still awaits approval from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Project and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. If approved, JCP&L will begin construction June 2017. Construction is expected to be complete by June 2019.
JCP&L is a subsidiary of FirstENergy Corp. It serves 1.1 million electricity customers throughout New Jersey, including Burlington, Ocean, Sussex, Somerset and Warren Counties.
