A program launched by ComEd in 2014 that enables customers to earn credits towards their electric bills by voluntarily reducing energy use during peak hours has reached record enrollment leading up to the summer months this year, with 160,000 participating customers.
From June 1 through September 30, participants registered for the meter-enabled program who reduce their energy usage during ComEd’s announced Peak Time Savings Hours will see discounts appear on their next energy bill. Last summer, the program saw savings of $385,000 across 52,000 customers’ accounts.
“The Peak Time Savings program is another way our smart meter technology is bringing value to our customers,” Val Jensen, ComEd’s senior vice president of customer operations, said. “Smart meters are at the heart of what we believe will become the electricity network of the future and we will continue to use smart grid technology as a platform to explore innovative solutions to provide customers with reliable electric service and more options on managing their electricity use and costs.”
With 2.3 million smart meters installed to date, ComEd plans to more than double their total installations, with an additional four million meters expected to be functioning across ComEd’s 11,000-square-mile territory by the end of 2018.
