DOE to put up $100 million into OPEN funding for transformative energy projects
The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) has created a new OPEN funding opportunity, thanks to $100 million issued by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in the hopes of fueling innovators researching changes to the nation’s energy system.
The last such solicitation came in 2015, while similar efforts made in 2012 and 2009 as well. It is an outreach effort that allows ARPA-E a hand in R&D projects that could be transformational–even if they do not fall within ARPA-E’s usual portfolio.
“The Department of Energy plays a critical role in keeping the United States safe and secure,” Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said. “One of the ways we do this is by promoting energy innovations that make us more competitive and keep us ahead of the technology curve. With OPEN 2018, we are asking American energy entrepreneurs and researchers to show us the next breakthrough in energy security.”
Be it security or otherwise, though, OPEN will be picking its projects by how uniquely innovative they are for energy applications. A deadline for application has been set for Feb. 12, 2018.
