Southern Power, a subsidiary of the Southern Company, announced the acquisition of the Grant Plains wind facility in Oklahoma from Apex Clean Energy on Monday.

The Grant Plains wind facility is under construction in Grant County. Once completed, the facility is expected to produce 147 megawatts (MW) of clean, renewable energy using 64 wind turbines manufactured by Siemens.

“The acquisition of the Grant Plains wind facility is an important step in strategically growing our renewable energy portfolio,” Southern Power President and CEO Buzz Miller said. “This project aligns with our business model and underscores our commitment to developing wind generation.”

Southern Power has recently been pursuing a business strategy centered on the acquisition and construction of generating assets, as well as the growth of their renewables – goals that have been actively pursued with the previous purchases of the Grant Wind facility and Kay Wind facility, both of which were acquired from Apex.

With the addition of the Grant Plains facility as its third wind facility, Southern Power’s wind generation will reach a total of 597 MW, comprising nearly one-quarter of its 2,400 MW renewable portfolio, which includes solar and biomass facilities. Since 2012, Southern Company has added or announced more than 4,000 MW of renewable energy generation.
