Georgia PSC celebrates new solar facility at Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany
The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new solar facility at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia, in the company of community leaders and members.
“This project will provide security and resiliency for the power grid here at the Marine Corps Logistics Base and in the greater community,” PSC Vice-Chairman and Commissioner Lauren “Bubba” McDonald said. “Projects like these will ensure that Georgia military bases will survive any future recommendations for base closures.”
The solar facility will be developed through a partnership between Georgia Power and The Department of the Navy. It is expected to span 150 acres and produce up to 30 megawatts of alternating current or 44 megawatts of direct current. The project is expected to be completed some time next year.
“This solar facility is the result of the continuing partnership between the Georgia Public Service Commission, Georgia Power, and the Department of the Navy to develop solar energy in Georgia while keeping rates low,” Commissioner Doug Everett said.
The project marks the fifth PSC groundbreaking event on Georgia’s military bases within the past year. Similar project are under development at Fort Benning in Columbus, Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Fort Gordon in Augusta, and the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. The projects total 166 megawatts in combined capacity.
