Great Plains Energy signed on Monday two power purchase agreements (PPA) for 444 megawatts (MW) of power from two new Kansas wind facilities owned by EDP Renewables and NextEra Energy Resources in Kansas.
Great Plains Energy will purchase the power generated by the 244 MW Pratt Wind Energy Center, in Pratt County, Kansas, which is owned by a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources.
The other wind farm is the 200 MW Prairie Queen Wind Farm in Allen County, Kansas, which is owned by EDP Renewables.
“We are pleased to grow our renewable energy portfolio available for serving our customers while expanding our commitment to sustainability with clean electricity generated from these wind farms,” Duane Anstaett, vice president of generation at Kansas City Power and Light Company (KCP&L), which is a subsidiary of Great Plains Energy, said.
Pratt Wind is expected to complete construction by Dec. 31, 2018, and Prairie Queen Wind Farm is expected to complete construction by May 31, 2019.
The two new wind facilities will increase Great Plains Energy’s wind resources to a capacity of approximately 1,800 MW, which will be approximately 25 percent of the company’s generating portfolio in 2019.
