Jim Matheson named new NRECA CEO

Former U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson (R-UT) steps into his new role as CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) this week.

Matheson, who served seven terms during his tenure as as Utah’s congressman, will fill the role vacated by Jo Ann Emerson, who worked as NRECA’s CEO for more than two years before illness forced her resignation.

The NRECA board of directors selected Matheson for his skills as a diplomatic negotiator who was able to seek common ground in order to build consensus. During his time in the House of Representatives, Matheson served as chief deputy whip for the House Democratic Caucus, and as co­-chairman of the Blue Dog Coalition.

“I’m thrilled to be here and eager to roll up my sleeves and get to work with my new colleagues and NRECA’s members,” Matheson said. “My initial focus will be learning the business side of NRECA and what makes it such an exceptional and successful organization. I’m really looking forward to getting out to meet with our members to learn more about their interests and discuss how NRECA can best continue to represent them in the nation’s capital.”

NRECA’s Jeffrey Connor, who served as interim CEO, will return to his position as COO with the organization.
