Hoboken to purchase 100 percent clean electricity for municipal facilities

City of Hoboken Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla recently announced that the city will begin purchasing 100 percent clean, renewable electricity for its municipal facilities beginning in April of 2019.

“Hoboken is committed to improving our global environment through our transition to 100 percent renewable electricity,” Mayor Bhalla said. “Utilizing wind and solar sources will substantially reduce our dependence on fossil fuels that contribute to greenhouse gases and global warming. This is a major milestone that puts Hoboken at the forefront of New Jersey in combating climate change and upholding the ideals of the Paris Agreement.”

Twenty-eight percent of the electricity will be generated in New Jersey by wind and solar energy, while 72 percent will be supplied by wind energy generated outside of the state.

Hoboken projects that switching to renewables will decrease costs by nine percent over two years. The city will pay less than 11 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Previously, Hoboken purchased electricity from PSE&G, and 18 percent of the electricity was generated from renewable sources. The city will now purchase electricity through a third-party supplier, Aggressive Energy LLC.

Mayor Bhalla also recently signed a pledge committing to a goal of 100 percent clean, renewable electricity community-wide, which is part of the Sierra Club Mayors for 100 Clean Energy Campaign.
