Orange & Rockland selects Key Capture Energy to establish new battery storage project

Orange & Rockland (O&R) announced Wednesday its selection of Albany-based Key Capture Energy (KCE) to plan, design, install and operate a new battery storage project in Pomona, N.Y.

The project, stemming from New York’s initiative to install 1,500 megawatts (MW) of battery storage by 2025, is part of O&R’s larger Pomona Non-Wires Alternative Project, meant to reduce power plant emissions and increase reliability. It will connect to their system through overhead distribution lines.

“The O&R Pomona Non-Wires Alternative Project provides a solution that has far reaching benefits that accrue to utility customers as well as to the environment,” Dan Fitzgerald, KCE CEO, said. “As a company based in New York State, we are very pleased to work with O&R, and look forward to further improving their distribution assets.”

O&R vice president Francis Peverly added that the new technology inherent in the system would have the added benefit of minimizing future costs for their customers. The company noted that the project at large will not only be environmentally beneficial but stimulate job creation and economic benefits as well.
