The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has welcomed two new members this year, with governor-appointed Carrie Zalewski taking over as chairman and Maria Bocanegra appointed to a commissioner role.

Zalewski’s role is a five-year term, effective as of last week. Bocanegra’s began on April 8, but will only run for four years. Both women come to their roles with an extensive history in public service.

Zalewski has served on the Illinois Pollution Control Board since 2009, a role appointed to her by both Democratic and Republican governors. She has also served as Assistant Chief Counsel for the Illinois Department of Transportation, beyond her private practice work.

“I would like to thank Governor Pritzker and the Illinois State Senate for this opportunity to serve the citizens of Illinois,” Zalewski said. “As Chairman of the ICC, I am committed to engaging with all interested parties and stakeholders in an open and transparent manner as we tackle the challenges that lie ahead.”

Bocanegra has served as Arbitrator for the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission, held the public seat on the Illinois Department of Labor’s Labor Advisory Board, and dedicated her private practice to workers’ compensation and personal injury claims.

“I look forward to working alongside Chairman Zalewski on this important commission,” Bocanegra said. “I am aware of the complexities facing this position and the important balancing of the interests that must be achieved.”
