Marybel Batjer assumes executive position at California Public Utilities Commission

Gov. Gavin Newsom installed last week Marybel Batjer as the new president of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Batjer was formerly the Secretary of the California Government Operations Agency — a department formed in 2013 under her leadership. Her role there included modernization of state approaches to data and technology, retooling the state’s civil service system and seeing green initiatives enacted throughout state government.

“The CPUC is one of the most important regulatory agencies in California, with oversight over industries that impact nearly every Californian,” Batjer said. “I’m honored Governor Newsom selected me for this role as the state faces unprecedented challenges caused by wildfires and climate change. I look forward to working with my fellow Commissioners, the staff of the CPUC, and the many stakeholders to the CPUC’s processes to ensure that we are all benefiting the state and its consumers.”

In her new role, Batjer will replace Michael Picker, who is retiring from the position he has held since 2014. Batjer will oversee a team of commissioners serving six-year terms, each of which requires Senate confirmation. Together, they will regulate services and utilities, monitor environmental protections, and secure utility infrastructure and services in California.
