FirstEnergy Corp. crews installed a $98 million transmission line in Doddridge and Harrison counties in West Virginia about a month ago to support the electric needs of the shale gas industry.

“As West Virginia’s prominent shale gas industry continues its upward trajectory, FirstEnergy works diligently to keep pace with infrastructure enhancements such as this new transmission line,” said Holly Kauffman, FirstEnergy’s president of West Virginia Operations.

“We are committed to supporting this important growth industry that consumes significant amounts of electricity to run compressor stations and midstream gas processing plants. Our upgrades to the region’s electric grid also enhance service reliability, benefitting thousands of our longtime customers,” she said.

The 138-kilovolt line is crucial for enhancing service reliability for approximately 13,000 Mon Power customers in the Salem and Clarksburg areas. It is also a vital transmission line that will help support the area’s Marcellus Shale gas industry demands.

The line is supported by 80 steel structures and the line route is parallel to an existing FirstEnergy transmission line. The new line passes through an 18-mile corridor linking transmission substations throughout the Clarksburg and Sherwood areas, with new or upgraded substations located at each end.
