ComEd offers insights into grid investments through newly personalized reliability reports

For its residential customers, ComEd of Illinois will highlight its energy grid investments by offering personalized reliability reports to be dispatched throughout the month.

These reports will summarize the time percentage during which existing customers received power over the previous year, along with the number of outages experienced during that time. ComEd intends for this to provide an opportunity for comparison and contrast, and to showcase the percentage of time power was available for its municipality and customers.

“We know how critical it is to deliver safe, reliable and affordable power to our customers,” ComEd President and COO Terry Donnelly said. “Thanks to the investments we have made in the grid and the great work of our 6,000 employees, ComEd improved reliability more than 70 percent since 2012, all while keeping bills flat for the past decade.”

Such efforts have been underway since 2011, when ComEd began a years-long effort to upgrade its electric grid, moving to a smart grid that significantly reduced outage frequency and duration. The utility estimates that since 2012, these efforts have avoided some 13 million more service interruptions. This has led to around $2.3 billion in societal savings.

This culminated last year in ComEd’s best reliability service period to date: most of its nearly 4 million customers suffered not a single outage.
