Bayport-Pioneer Rebuild Project greenlighted for 21-mile transmission line upgrade in Wisconsin
A 21-mile, 138,000-volt transmission line upgrade can proceed in Wisconsin’s Brown and Oconto Counties, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) said last week, granting the Bayport-Pioneer Rebuild Project the potential to be in service by 2022.
The project will stretch between the Bayport Substation in Brown County to the Pioneer Substation in Oconto County. Owner and operator American Transmission Company (ATC) submitted an application for the project in spring last year, which will see existing 69 kV wires replaced with 138 kV wires and the installation of a second set, along with upgrades to substations and transmission structures along the way.
“The existing Bayport-Pioneer transmission line infrastructure needs to be rebuilt and upgraded to better serve the electric needs in Brown and Oconto counties,” Jim Pericolosi, ATC project manager, said. “The PSC’s approval to replace outdated structures and wires significantly improves the region’s electric reliability and supports the area’s economic growth, which has been increasing over the last several years.”
Construction, expected to begin later this year, is expected to cost around $47 million.
