Southern Power buys Glass Sands wind facility in Oklahoma
Southern Power acquired the 118-megawatt (MW) Glass Sands Wind Facility in Murray County, Okla., from Steelhead Americas.
This is Southern Power’s 15th acquisition of a wind project and its fifth in Oklahoma. Glass Sands was developed by Steelhead Americas and is expected to utilize 28 wind turbines manufactured by Vestas. Construction is underway with plans to open it for commercial operation in the fourth quarter of this year. Once operational, the electricity generated by the facility will be sold under a power purchase agreement with Amazon.
“We are proud to announce this new addition to our generation portfolio,” Southern Power President Bill Grantham said. “Glass Sands is a great project for Southern Power as we continue to provide clean renewable energy resources to meet the needs of our customers.”
Southern Power’s wind portfolio now consists of more than 2,533 MW of wind generation, including Glass Sands. Southern Power has 43 solar and wind facilities, either operating or under construction, which will generate 4,928-MW of renewable energy.
