Appalachian Power issues request for solar proposals

Appalachian Power recently issued a request for proposals for up to 25 megawatts alternating current of ground-mounted solar energy resources.

Projects must be located in Appalachian Power’s Virginia or West Virginia service areas and be connected to either Appalachian Power’s distribution system or the PJM Regional Transmission Operator (RTO) in order to be considered. Qualifying projects should also have started construction after Jan. 1, 2016 and enter service by Dec. 31, 2019.

Appalachian Power may pursue the purchase of either the solar facilities or their energy output at the project’s completion.

The proposal submission window is open until March 9, 2017.

The accepted projects will represent the first solar energy in Appalachian Power’s portfolio. The company currently generates 1,900 gigawatt-hours of renewable wind and hydro energy each year.

Selected projects are conditioned upon approval by the proper regulatory agencies. Complete proposal criteria and necessary forms are available on Appalachian Power’s website.

In 2016, Appalachian Power’s Integrated Resource Plan said the company would add 590 megawatts of universal solar by 2030.

“We, as a company and an industry, continue to plan and adapt to the constant change of our markets so that we can remain healthy and deliver reliable power to our customers—now and in the future—at a reasonable price,” Charles Patton, Appalachian’s president and chief operating officer, said.
