Entergy Nuclear focused on nuclear, technology-neutral tax credits
In a speech to attendees of the annual EnergySolutions conference in Salt Lake City, Kimberly Cook-Nelson, Entergy Nuclear executive vice president and chief nuclear officer, laid out her company’s future and the focuses that could get it there.
Like many in the industry, Entergy currently has a net zero sustainability target for 2050 and milestone targets along the way. According to Cook-Nelson, Entergy views carbon-free nuclear offerings as a key part of that, so it intends to continue operations of its five nuclear units at four sites in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The company is headquartered in Jackson, Miss.
No energy company could ignore the opportunities put forth by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Cook-Nelson touched on this, noting that the recent law created significant tax credit incentives for energy offerings like nuclear. With this in mind, Entergy Nuclear will focus on nuclear production tax credits for existing plants and earning technology-neutral tax credits for advanced nuclear and small modular reactors. License renewals will be pursued as needed.
