Florida Power & Light brings total solar energy centers to 63 with three new additions

With the completion of three new solar energy centers this month, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) officially brought its total solar facilities to 63, bolstering the country’s largest community solar program.

“We’re excited to bring the new solar energy centers into operation and continuing our partnerships with local communities across the state to bring benefits to the area today and for years to come,” Tim Oliver, vice president of FPL development, said. “The new sites are also part of FPL’s SolarTogether program, which offers FPL customers the ability to invest in community solar without having to put solar panels on their roof and can help drive down their bills over time.”

The new facilities included Shirer Branch Solar Energy Center in Calhoun County, Wild Azalea Solar Energy Center in Gadsden County, and Chautauqua Solar Energy Center in Walton County. With their predecessors in tow, they brought the total solar power at FPL’s disposal to the equivalent of powering approximately 945,000 homes. Each site was designed to provide and incorporate habitats for native wildlife and increase overall biodiversity in their areas, and require no draw on water or fuel, thus requiring little in return.

As a part of SolarTogether, these facilities will allow subscribers to gain the benefits of large-scale solar energy – including monthly bill credits – for their share of the solar energy produced. In return, they will not need to invest in solar panels of their own, even though the credits will increase over time and lower their bills further.

The company has brought 13 additional solar energy centers online this year and plans to build more.
