The more than 5 million residential and small business customers of Southern California Edison (SCE) will receive an $86 credit on their April and October energy bills thanks to the California Climate Credit.

No action is required to receive the funds; it will be an automatic credit. Previous iterations of the payout – which has operated since 2014 as part of the statewide Greenhouse Gas Cap-and-Trade program – ranged from $29 to $71 for SCE customers. That program aims to reduce emissions by requiring power plants, fuel providers and large industrial facilities to buy carbon pollution allowances.

“This year’s Climate Credit delivers meaningful reductions on energy bills,” Funmi Williamson, SCE’s Chief Customer Officer and senior vice president of customer service, said. “It shows how programs designed to help California achieve a clean energy future can also provide tangible financial benefits for utility customers.”

Created by the California Air Resources Board, the Climate Credit is actively managed by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). Since 2014, it has distributed more than $14 billion in utility bill credits to customers of SCE, Pacific Gas & Electric, San Diego Gas & Electric, and other utilities throughout California.
