AREVA NP to provide outage services at Southern Nuclear’s Farley plant

AREVA NP recently signed a contract with Southern Nuclear to provide outage services at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant units 1 and 2 located near Dothan, Alabama during the course of six outages between 2017 and 2021.

In accordance with the contract, AREVA NP will provide refueling, steam generator and specialty non-destructive examination services, inspection and reactor coolant pump services.

“This contract marks the beginning of a four-year outage services agreement and an important next step in the long-term relationship with the team at Farley,” Craig Ranson, senior vice president of the Installed
Base Business Unit in the United States for AREVA NP, said. “Every day, our focus is on helping our customers maintain and improve the performance of their nuclear energy facilities. With our combined expert teams and advanced technologies, we will help the Farley Nuclear Generating Station achieve diversity of supply while improving operational performance.”

The Farley generating station provides more than 20 percent of Alabama Power’s electricity. It is owned by Alabama Power and operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Company. Southern Nuclear has worked with AREVA NP on various projects over the past five years, Dennis Madison, site vice president of the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, said.

“AREVA NP has an innovative and cost-effective approach to the work they do for us, and has proven that they are prepared to make improvements in our outage performance in the quality of work completed, outage duration and overall cost,” Madison said.
