PSC approves Duke Energy Kentucky solar power pilot projects

The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) approved Monday a proposal by Duke Energy Kentucky
to build three small solar power arrays, which will serve as pilot projects in preparation of adding more renewable power in the future.

The three solar projects will have a combined maximum output of approximately seven megawatts (MW). Two of the arrays will be built near Walton in Kenton County. They will each be capable of producing two megawatts (MW) of power. The other facility will be located near Crittenden in Grant County and produce
up to 2.75 MW.

The projects will be located in Duke Energy Kentucky’s service territory. The energy from the three solar arrays will generate solar renewable energy certificates, which can be sold in Ohio. A portion of the revenue from the certificates will be returned to Duke Kentucky customers as a credit.

Duke Kentucky will host community meetings to obtain input from those living close the sites. The company plans to plant evergreen trees along the borders of the properties where the projects will be located in order
to minimize the visibility of the facilities for neighbors.

The arrays will cost a total of approximately $14.8 million and cost $132,000 per year to operate and maintain. The projects will not immediately impact rates, although Duke Energy plans to seek to recover costs from ratepayers in the future.
