HECO Companies recently announced it has filed its final grid modernization strategy with the Hawaii state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) after receiving input from project stakeholders and the public.

The filing follows a January direction by the PUC that required HECO Companies to develop a grid modernization strategy to provide context and support for future grid modernization projects. An initial draft of HECO’s grid modernization strategy was submitted on June 30.

Modernization of the state’s electric power systems will specifically include the deployment of grid management systems, communications infrastructure, sensors, and automated controls which, according to the PUC, is fundamental to integrating renewable energy and achieving the state’s energy goals.

After HECO made its filing, the Hawaii PUC said it is inviting all interested parties to submit public comments regarding HECO’s final grid modernization strategy.
