The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) hosted Thursday a policy session in Chicago addressing the impacts of integrating renewable energy resources on the region’s transmission infrastructure and energy markets.

The session, held in light of the Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA) and future state goals, was the second installment of Illinois’ Power Meter titled Renewable Energy and Illinois’ Transmission System.

“We are building on the first Illinois’ Power Meter session, where we examined the integration of renewables at the distribution level,” Acting Commissioner Sadzi Martha Oliva said. “It is important to include a regional perspective for a holistic view on how increasing integration of distributed energy resources will impact Illinois.”

The Future Energy Jobs Act went into effect on June 1. The legislation expands the Renewable Portfolio Standard in an effort to increase the use of renewable energy sources. It also seeks to reduce emissions, enhance energy efficiency and save or create clean energy jobs in the state.

“It is important for stakeholders in our state to stay informed about the priorities and actions of regional entities operating in the MISO and PJM footprints,” Commissioner Sherina Maye Edwards said. “This session is an opportunity for those types of discussions to take place in the hopes of identifying shared goals and opportunities for collaboration.”
