New Mexico Public Regulation Commission Chair Sandy Jones recently announced that construction has begun on the 42-acre, five-megawatt solar project at Holloman Air Force Base outside of Alamogordo, New Mexico.
Holloman Air Force Base will purchase all the power generated by the facility, which will help the base to fulfill its mandate to use more renewable energy.
“I am excited to see this project break ground,” Jones said. “These are the kind of projects I want to continue to facilitate in southern New Mexico. This project is an example of utility business model changes that are good for citizens and business alike. I applaud my Commission’s leadership to approve new ideas that benefit our communities statewide.”
El Paso Electric will own and operate the facility. It will not affect rates for the utility’s customers.
“Anytime we can add more renewable energy to the portfolio, it is a big win for New Mexicans,” Jones said. “We should be leading the way in solar energy, and I will continue to help bring renewable energy projects like this to my district.”
