American Electric Power (AEP) announced Wednesday that it is seeking bids for the supply of coal to one or more of its electric generating stations, including Kentucky Power’s Mitchell Plant in West Virginia.

“Coal remains an important part of our communities and our business,” Kentucky Power President Matt Satterwhite said. “In Kentucky, about 80 percent of our electricity is generated using coal. We continue to look for innovative ways to support our coal businesses as we pursue long-term solutions that strengthen our region.”

AEP is seeking proposals for up to 400,000 tons of Central Appalachian coal, FOB Barge; up to 1,700,000 tons of Powder River Basin coal, FOB Rail (joint-line served); and up to 250,000 tons of Illinois Basin coal, FOB Barge. All proposals would begin in January 2018 and end in June 2018.

AEP said that it is open to alternative pricing structures or other value-added concepts. AEP will accept proposal packages until Dec. 4.
