Pennsylvania PUC welcomes David Sweet as commissioner

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) announced the appointment last week of David Sweet as a new commissioner to the organization in a unanimous 49-0 vote by the Senate Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee.

“David’s extensive background in economic development and finance will lend itself well to the Commission’s work and its mission, balancing the needs of consumers and utilities,” PUC Chairman Gladys M. Brown said. “He brings decades of experience from both state government and private law, and my colleagues and I will value his diverse insight and his commitment to serving consumers as we address the important issues faced at the Commission every day.”

Sweet said that he would strive to be a watchdog for consumers and educate residents on their options and rights in the competitive energy economy.

“Providing consumers with the information needed to make educated decisions related to service and finances is of utmost importance,” Sweet said. “The commission has done great work in this arena, and it will be a top priority of mine.”

Prior to working with the PUC, Sweet served as a senior advisor to Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, working with the governor on economic and energy development strategies for Philadelphia and the greater state. Sweet also helped enact major legislation regarding land use, zoning and taxes during his service in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1977 to 1988.

Sweet has a long track record of successful practice at two major law firms in Pennsylvania, as well as public service through various government committees and organizations.
