Virginia State Corporation Commission approves Dominion’s Greensville Power Station

The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) approved a request on Tuesday to construct a cutting-edge natural gas-fired power station in Greensville County.

Dominion Virginia Power will operate the $1.3 billion facility.

“We are pleased that the SCC has granted approval for the Greensville Power Station,” Dominion Generation Group CEO Paul Koonce said. “This project will ultimately bring low cost, reliable electricity to our customers while saving them $2 billion over the life of the plants’ operation, in addition to providing a major economic impact and good paying jobs for Southside Virginia.”

Dominion Virginia Power previously filed a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity request for the construction of a facility to serve the Greensville area. Greensville residents would otherwise have to purchase electricity on the open market without the development of a regional facility. The on-site plant will save consumers an estimated $2.1 billion over the lifetime of the station.

Construction on the station will begin later this year. The station will generate more than 1,500 megawatts of electricity and will reside on a 55-acre plot on the Greensville/Brunswick County line. Construction is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs, with the plant employing 45 full-time workers by 2019.

The station will utilize clean-burning natural gas and advanced emission-reduction technology. In addition, the facility will have the option to incorporate solar energy into its operations, as it is part of the condition use permit for the site.
