The Energy and Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Energy and Power held a hearing on Friday to assess two proposed nuclear energy bills to determine how to overcome hurdles to new nuclear energy development.

“It’s time for Congress to ensure that the NRC provides the framework so that innovators and investors can develop new technologies,” U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH), who introduced the bill, said. “Passing this legislation is key to ensure that the United States remains a leader in the nuclear industry, which is vital for both our electricity mix, and our national security.

Committee leaders discussed the Advanced Nuclear Technology Development Act of 2016, H.R. 4979, and the Nuclear Utilization of Keynote Energy Policies Act to determine how to encourage more research and development for nuclear energy as a clean, alternative energy source.

H.R. 4979 would require the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to collaborate with the U.S. Department of Energy for advanced nuclear development. The Nuclear Utilization of Keynote Energy Policies Act, meanwhile, would improve internal operations at the NRC and encourage new investments in energy facilities and technologies.

Nuclear energy makes up 20 percent of the current U.S. energy portfolio. It provides carbon-free electricity, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the country. Committee hearing participants supported the implementation of both bills to further the nuclear energy advancements within the U.S.
