U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) questioned the Department of Energy’s (DoE) Inspector General nominee Susan Beard on Thursday on her proposed approach to working independently and ethically in the position.

“I think we can all agree that the Department of Energy needs a permanent Inspector General,” Murkowski said. “But I think we can also agree that given the importance of this position, we have to be sure we have the right person, before we confirm anyone to it. I am committed to ensuring that the individual we confirm is fully independent, with good judgment in difficult situations. The candidate must also have a firm grasp of the responsibilities of an Inspector General – not only to the Secretary, but to Congress as well.”

“This isn’t about publishing a report, this is about getting results,” Cantwell added. “The job calls for someone with both integrity and demonstrated ability, someone who is familiar with the department’s many programs but who can still maintain her independence from the agency. The inspector general must be able to identify the department’s failings, recommend corrective actions and ensure progress is being made to correct problems.”

President Obama nominated Beard for the position. Beard spent 27 years of her career serving as the assistant general counsel to the DoE. Both Murkowski and Cantwell felt that Beard had fair credentials for the position, yet are determined to find a candidate that can uphold ethics when working independently.
