The Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and Power approved two bipartisan bills on Thursday to give states flexibility in implementing new ozone standards and for the advancement of nuclear technology.

“States have worked hard over the last few decades to reduce ozone levels and improve air quality,” Energy and Power Subcommittee Vice Chairman Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) said. “The trend has been positive in lowering emissions and providing cleaner air. We must keep this trend in the right direction, while balancing the goal with available technology and states’ ability to meet new levels. My bill provides needed flexibility so that states and localities can adequately achieve new, lower standards with time for compliance. I want to thank Chairman Upton for moving this important bill forward.”

The Ozone Standards Implementation Act of 2016, H.R. 4775, will provide states with the flexibility to meet new ozone standards outlined in the National Ambient Air Quality Standards Program. The second approved bill, H.R. 4979, will require the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to collaborate with the U.S. Department of Energy to create a framework for the advancement of nuclear energy technologies.

Energy and Power Subcommittee members expressed support for the bills, adding that they will provide new jobs and growth for the industry and American workers.
