AES Energy Storage entered into two contracts with San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) on Thursday for the installation of two energy storage arrays totaling 37.5 megawatts (MW) via its Advancion energy storage sites in San Diego County, California.

“We are excited that SDG&E has selected AES’ Advancion energy storage solution to help meet peak demand and ensure the reliability of the electric grid in Southern California,” AES President and CEO Andres Gluski said. “AES recently made Advancion available to utilities, developers and commercial customers interested in owning our innovative and scalable solution, and SDG&E’s selection of Advancion highlights the significant growth potential we see for our energy storage business.”

AES Energy Storage, a subsidiary of the AES Corporation, seeks to improve energy reliability for utilities and other industry customers throughout the country through its proprietary energy storage technology for rapid deployment. Approximately one-third of the stored energy is sourced from wind and solar, improving access to clean, renewable energy.

AES secured the contracts through a competitive solicitation commissioned by the California Public Utilities Commission. AES’ Advancion 4 won the Edison Electric Institute’s 2016 International Edison Award. Its San Diego County facility is expected to be operational by January 2017.

AES has developed battery-based energy storage solutions for the grid since 2008.
