Bechtel recognized for providing safe and innovative energy infrastructure

Bechtel was awarded the Engineering News-Record (ENR) Global Best Project Award in the power/industrial category on Monday for its safe and innovative engineering and construction contributions to the Curtis Island Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) program.

ENR, a leading publication that reports on the engineering and constructions industry, annually recognizes global projects in 18 industrial categories for safe and creative solutions in design and construction, international teamwork, community contributions, and quality of design and construction.

“We are thrilled to have received the ENR award for the unprecedented scale of engineering and construction work on Curtis Island in Australia,” President of Bechtel’s Oil, Gas and Chemicals Business Unit Alasdair Cathcart said. “This industry recognition is a testament to our talented team who has worked collaboratively with our customers, the excellence of our extensive global supply chain, and the local community in Gladstone. Everyone pulled together to deliver reliable gas liquefaction facilities as well as sustainable local benefits. I congratulate you all on this outstanding achievement.”

Queensland Curtis LNG, Australia Pacific LNG and Santos GLNG each hired Bechtel to design and construct two train LNG facilities located side by side on Curtis Island, north of the city of Gladstone, Australia. The three simultaneous construction programs mark one of the largest concentrations of private-capital investment in Australia’s history. Once complete, the three facilities will produce approximately 25 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG, equivalent to powering a city the size of Tokyo, and will account for approximately 8 percent of global LNG production.

Design and construction of the three plants included 30,000 people across seven countries on four continents. Bechtel attained best-in-class safety results through innovative safety programs that were recognized with the Australian National Safety Award of Excellence.

Bechtel worked with the local community and Australian authorities to further develop the Australian craft workforce and increase local participation, including a program to deliver the largest intake of adult apprentices in Australia, with 436 apprentices hired and approximately 11,000 others receiving accredited training.

As a global leader in the LNG industry, Bechtel is responsible for approximately one-third of LNG liquefaction capacity currently under construction, including the Chevron-operated Wheatstone LNG project in Western Australia, and the first LNG export facility in the U.S., Cheniere’s Sabine Pass Liquefaction project.
