Convergen Energy announced on Tuesday that it had purchased the L’Anse Warden Electric Company (LWEC) power plant in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan from the Traxys Power Group.
Based in Green Bay, Wis., Convergen is a renewable alternative fuels supplier with plans to enter the renewable power market. The LWEC purchase is a step towards the company’s goal of reducing the its customers’ carbon footprint and supporting local communities. The 20 megawatt combined heat and power (CHP) power plant has been a major employer in L’Anse for more than 55 years.
“Convergen is pleased to have completed this purchase,” Ted Hansen, CEO of Convergen Energy said. “LWEC has a proven history of producing renewable power and provides a valuable source of power generation in the U.P. We look forward to being a part of the community and providing reliable power generation in the U.P. for years to come.”
The LWEC plant provides electric power to the Upper Peninsula under a power purchase agreement for renewable energy, and also delivers steam and electricity to the adjacent CertainTeed Plant in L’Anse, Mich.
