Georgia Power employees, members of the local community and industry partners recently gathered at the Scherer Plant in Monroe County, Georgia to celebrate its designation as the 2017 Plant of the Year by the Powder River Basin (PRB) Coal Users’ Group.

The PRB Coal Users’ Group, a nonprofit organization that promotes the use of PRB coal by generating companies, announced the award on the front cover of Power Magazine’s July issue.

In choosing the plant of the year, the group evaluates criteria that include safety, fire protection and risk reduction benchmarks, capital improvement projects, operational best practices, environmental performance, coal handling as well as boiler and combustion capabilities.

“I’m very proud of my team,” Johnny Howze III, manager at Plant Scherer, said. “They did an excellent job working together to make improvements that ensure we are operating efficiently to provide customers with reliable and affordable energy. They strive for excellence, and they achieve it. We are pleased that our employees’ hard work on these projects and the positive impact on the communities we serve is being recognized.”

Plant Scherer is located next to Lake Juliette in Monroe County, Georgia between Atlanta and Macon. The plant’s four units have a capacity of 3600 megawatts. In recent years, Georgia Power added scrubbers, selective catalytic reduction systems, and baghouses to the plant to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and mercury.
