Ameren Illinois gave a presentation at the Illinois Commerce Commission at its annual policy meeting on summer preparedness and announced on Saturday that it is prepared to meet the anticipated summer demand for electricity.

The presentation covered Ameren Illinois’ investment in distribution systems and transmission lines to determine if the electric utility could reasonably meet the summer demand for electricity for its central and southern Illinois customers. Ameren worked with the Midwest Independent System Operator on a Coordinated Summer Assessment titled the “Summer Operating Study,” which determined that the utility will be able to meet the estimated summer demand of 7,746 megawatts (MW) of power.

“Ameren Illinois serves 1.2 million electric customers that rely on us to deliver safe, reliable energy each day,” Ameren Illinois Senior CP of Operations and Technical Service Ron Pate said. “Through the investments we’re making in the transmission and distribution systems, we’re meeting the needs of our customers today, while also planning for the future.”

To enhance its infrastructure, Ameren Illinois has initiated a multi-year plan to strengthen its distribution facilities, modernize the electric grid, and improve system reliability and performance. Ameren Illinois owns and manages approximately 4,600 circuit miles of transmission and 181 substations.
